The Border of Death

By Kington
The Border is a deep black. Somehow the black of the Border is a different black from the black of the boy's clothes. It looks like the black of Death's robes but he doesn't know that.

The boy examines the build of the Border. It's built in a castle fashion from shiny slate rock the wall is about 8 feet high. Low enough for taller men to try climbing over but too smooth for anyone to try climbing over.

The boy decides to travel along the Border in hope that it gets shorter somewhere or has a gap.

He walks for 2 days along the Border. With no sign of it getting shorter.

The victims of this realm all don't need to find food. They've got plenty of Pain to eat.

Full of frustration from following this endless wall even with his incredible patience he snaps finally. He sobs silently as he continues following the wall. Leaving wet teardrops around the bloody footsteps in the glass.

He spots an oddly shaped long knife. Rusted, chipped but of a studier make. Oddly cool to the touch but it's origin unknown. The boy picks it up.

The howls of the Hounds begin again. The boy scans the horizon and sees a small pack coming towards him.

He grips the knife in 2 hands. As the beasts draw nearer he readies himself emotionally for the impending pain but he figures he might as well get himself ready to finally kill one of those damned beasts.

The Knife of Emotions sometimes appears to sufferers in this realm. Those who succeed in wielding it normally gain something.....But there never is a guarantee what they gain.

The boy doesn't know he wields it.

He hacks at the hounds as they assault him. A larger pack than yesterday. He dodges quick and plunges the blade into the head of a slower hound. A lucky stab. But sometimes all you need is a little grace from God. The rest ignore their fallen comrade and tackle the boy to the floor going for the same thing his heart and guts again.

He slashes wildly at the hounds trying to succeed in reducing their numbers until the hounds begin biting his hands and he loses grip.

Twilight comes.

The boys gets up noticing that he's recovered faster. He spots the body of the hound laying nearby he also finds the knife.

He decides to vent his fury on the corpse.

His hatred of getting mauled by a pack of beasts with blunt teeth, his unhappiness of being caught in this wretched place for so long, his hate of having been unable to find someone to help him and most of all his sorrow for being alone all this time.

He makes a pelt of the hound a small one but a pelt all the same.

He eats the flesh picking the bones clean. The meat bitter. Like bitter pain, but all the same he eats it all because of his anger.

After eating it all which wasn't much he went to sleep.

Daylight breaks.

The child wakes feeling uneasy. He finds the knife still with him the pelt still there the bones along with broken glass under his feet and realises he's still stuck there but at least he's finally got back at the Hounds.

He wraps the bones in his shirt and ties the sleeves together as a bag and uses the pelt to cover his body. He follows the walls yet again.

A few hours pass.

He stops to rest and sits on the pelt oddly offering protection from the broken glass.

He hears a tap. Like a staff tapping a stone. He looks around and notices the shadow of the wall has changed. He glances up and sees a robed figure with a scythe.

He realises it's Death.

He's stunned with fear. He doesn't dare make a move.

Then Death rears the scythe back.

The child closes his eyes glad to be finally free from this land from this wretched world.

He waits for awhile about 5 minutes and then he finally opens his eyes. He sees that Death has gripped his scythe a few inches below the blade and is offering the end to the boy.

The wooden end so he can help the boy climb over the wall.

The young child looks at Death a malevelont figure looming over him standing on the wall with eyes full of gratitude.

Then Death speaks, with a gravely voice hollow and old.

"Would you be willing to serve me? In exchange I take you out of this world."
The boy merely reaches out and grabs the stick. Sobbing gently as he does so.

Sobbing because he has finally escaping the world after being stuck there for 5 years which felt like an eternity.
